Leaf Monkeys at Kurulubedda, Galle
Saturday 12 January 2008 Kurulubedda, Galle
I visited with Anoma Algiyawadu the two chalets built beside the river about a kilometer from Lighthouse Hotel.
Mixed flock of Scaly-breatsed and White-backed Munias. The young of the Scaly-breasted lack the scales and have a brownish wash on the underparts. The Munias were feeding on the green grains of the raw paddy.
Two troops of Purple-faced Leaf Monkey on either side of the river. Apparently they come very close to the chalets. May turn out to be one of the best places in which to photograph or film them. Later I also observed a small troop at Rummassala who were confidently eating the flowers of the Gliceridia sp in a village garden.
The mangroves by the river had a large Water Monitor. Also Common Kingfisher, Blue-tailed Bee-eater, Stork-billed Kingfisher, Common Kingfisher, etc. A Sociable Glider (Tramea limbata) was hawking over the pond.
